The View from Spain

As a past leader with Journeying and now an Associate, I was pleased to be asked to contribute an occasional blog from where I am now living - in Southern Spain, Almeria to be exact. What a beautiful part of the country it is and, being lucky enough to be retired, I have the time to explore it and get to know some of the people that I meet on my travels.

Last September saw myself, my husband and our dog packed into our car along with many sundry belongings, as we set off on our long journey to our new home here. It wasn't the first time we'd done it, as we had visited our holiday apartment here several times previously, but this time it was a final goodbye to our life in Somerset. The trip itself was uneventful and we met many people as we travelled through the Eurotunnel, down through France and then across the border into Spain, taking our time and visiting some wonderful places on the way. I am sure you can feel the spirit of a place when you are alone, but is it better when someone is with you to share that feeling? I think this is the ethos of Journeying and being a member certainly taught me to appreciate the wonders around me and, to use another's words, to find God in creation.

Since settling here we have been thankful for the friendliness and helpfulness shown to us, by both Spanish and British people. We are beginning to integrate into the community and I now attend a small chapel just down the road, which was built by the Spanish but where occasional services are held by the Anglican church - again a very friendly and welcoming place. Unfortunately the trees at the side of the building were being felled the other day and one went the wrong way and landed on the roof! Luckily only a few of the tiles were damaged and the roof will no doubt be mended in the fullness of time.

There is a lot more I could share with you, but maybe I will save that for next time ....
Adiós por ahora!
