Description

The ancient walled town of Tenby, situated on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path with its picturesque harbour and quaint streets, provides the perfect base for our journey along the Pembrokeshire coast. And a mile out to sea from Tenby harbour, is the lovely pastoral island of Caldey, home to a monastic community for more than 1500 years. We’ll spend a whole day on the island.

Walks and Excursions

The Pembrokeshire coastal path offers a great variety of scenery (rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, wooded estuaries) with many walk possibilities. We plan three such walks:

Tenby to the coastal village of Manorbier, complete with castle and Norman Church. A coastal walk of some 8 miles, steep in places and rough underfoot, with wonderful sea views all the way!

Tenby to Saundersfoot. Mostly coastal, occasionally wooded, a walk of 5 miles that’s rough underfoot with a couple of steep gradients. The views out to sea and back towards Tenby are picture postcard!

Short coastal walk to Penally. St Teilo, friend and possibly cousin of St David, was born here in 480 AD. St Samson, Abbot of Caldey Island, was also a friend and the island, visible from Penally, was no doubt visited by Teilo.

In Tenby we enjoy an evening Prayer Walk from St Julian's, the Fisherman's Chapel. There will be time as well to browse the many small shops, wander the narrow streets and if you wish go for a swim or simply sit on the beach!

From Tenby harbour we travel out to Caldey Island by motorboat, where we will be able to explore the village nestling around the village green, with the magnificent Italian style monastery as backdrop, early churches, join the monks at their mid-day service and walk to many of the other sites that make this such a special place. We’ll also visit the little chocolate factory! All of this in the footsteps of pilgrims stretching back to who knows when!

Accommodation

We have five nights in our own house, situated in a quiet area, just two minutes' walk from Tenby's ancient town walls. We will be catering for ourselves with everyone taking a share in meal preparation and the laying and clearing of tables. Rooms are single, twin and double.

Getting there

Please arrive at our accommodation sometime after 4 p.m. on the 4th. Our evening meal will be at 6.30 p.m. The railway station is a short distance from our house. Long-stay car parking is available.
