Description
The Isle of Man lies in the middle of the Irish Sea between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Based in Douglas, the island's capital, we will explore the island's superb coastal and mountain scenery, using public transport both vintage and modern. There will be opportunities to visit sites of early Celtic Christianity.
Walks and Excursions
Our walks reflect the diversity of landscape around us and will be available each day, with distances varying between 3 and 7 miles. We will stroll along coastal footpaths, exploring the island's small towns and unspoilt glens, as well as venturing inland into the hills, for which stout footwear is required. Taking advantage of buses as well as Victorian trams and steam train, we will explore much of the island. The walks below are graded according to distance and difficulty.
- Travel by Victorian electric trams to the 2036ft (621m) summit of Snaefell, the island's highest point, with time to explore the picturesque village of Laxey. (3 miles, easy)
- West to the fishing port of Peel which has much of interest, visiting the island's Cathedral and gardens before climbing Peel Hill and following the coastal path before descending to the pretty village of Patrick with its chapel and the site of Britain's largest World War I internment camp. (5 miles, moderate)
- By bus to the island's far south, with scenic views of Calf Island and perhaps seals, before walking along the stunning coastal path to Port St Mary. (6 miles, strenuous)
- A circular country walk on the west coast, offering stunning hill and sea views. We will visit Patrick's keeill, one of many ancient Celtic chapels dotting the island. (5 miles, moderate)
- By steam train to the former capital of Castletown before setting out on the coast path around Scarlett, looking out for marine life and exploring history at the excavated site at Balladoole. (6 miles, easy)
Accommodation
We will be staying at the Ascot, a comfortable hotel just off Douglas promenade. Well-appointed single, twin and double-bedded rooms are available – all with en-suite facilities. Breakfast, evening meal and packed lunches are provided.
