Description

Grasmere lies in the heart of the English Lake District and remains one of the most well-known yet unspoiled villages, largely due to its picturesque location and its ties to William Wordsworth (1770–1850). With its dramatic fells, beautiful lake, and blend of cultural and historical attractions, this Cumbrian village is always popular with visitors from across the world.

Grasmere offers an ideal centre for exploring superb mountain scenery and nearby lakes. Walking will vary from between 5 to 7 miles each day, avoiding the high peaks. As with all Journeying holidays there will be pauses for reflections and times to sit and look and ‘do nothing in the presence of God’.

Walks and Excursions

Circular walks offered each day from Glenthorne include:

- Grasmere Circuit. A gentle orientation walk around Grasmere village – passing Wordsworth's Dove Cottage - and the scenic lake which shares its name (5 miles).

- Easedale. An exploration of beautiful Easedale, gradually ascending this unspoiled valley with its dramatic waterfall to arrive for a lunch stop at Easedale Tarn, surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of mountains, returning via Far Easedale (5 miles).

- Rydal Circuit. We skirt Grasmere and climb up to Loughrigg Terrace with stunning views of Rydal Water followed by an essential visit to Rydal Hall tea shop! We return along the contour of the old 'Coffin Route' (6 miles).

- Langdale. A stiff climb over Silver How followed by a steep descent into lovely Langdale, passing through its pretty riverside villages of Chapel Stile and Elterwater before returning via Huntingstile Crag (7 miles).

Accommodation

We shall be staying at Glenthorne Guest House on the outskirts of Grasmere which exudes a peaceful atmosphere with its Quaker values and ethos. It provides a relaxed and welcoming environment, comfortable accommodation and delicious home-cooked meals. Well-appointed single and double-bedded rooms are available, some of which are ensuite; some are with shared bathrooms. Breakfast, evening meal and packed lunches are provided.
