On 24th April seven pilgrims gathered at a lovely house in Beaumaris, which was to be our base for the week. We looked forward to spending time together exploring the beautiful island of Anglesey and getting to know one another.

On our first full day we walked to Penmon Point, passing Aberlleiniog Castle on the way. Unfortunately the castle was closed off, but we were able to visit Penmon Priory with its amazing dovecote and also the nearby St Seriol’s Well.

The following day took us to Cemaes Bay, which has two beaches – the Little Beach and the Big Beach! There is also a Tide Bell, which rings when the sea reaches it and is one of only five in Britain. From there we walked to a watchtower, where we had our lunch surrounded by amazing views. We then visited Parys Mountain, where metals have been mined since the Bronze Age, hence its alternative name of Copper Mountain. The different colours were stunning in the sun’s reflections. In fact, it is such a big place to wander around that some of us may have had a little difficulty finding our way back to the cars!

Monday saw us taking a circular walk from Rhoscolon to All Saints Bay, where we had great fun skimming pebbles into the sea. Some of us also picked up two white stones to drop into St Gwenfaen’s Well, which it is said has healing powers. We also visited St Gwenfaen’s Church, where we were met by one of the churchwardens, who made us very welcome and told us a lot about the area.

On Tuesday we walked via a forest to Llanddwynn Island, which is situated on the Anglesey Coastal Path. Although not strictly an island, the furthest beach is cut off for approximately half an hour each day, but we made sure we didn’t get stranded! It turned out to be an exciting afternoon, as on our way back along the cliff path we bumped into Clare Balding! She then interviewed us for her Radio 4 programme “Ramblings” and we should be included in the programme to be aired on 4th June.

On our final day together we enjoyed a nearby walk through some woods and around an estuary, before having free time in the afternoon to explore Beaumaris and be treated to an ice cream. We had been blessed with sunshine all week and, although rather windy at times, there had been no rain.

The following day we went our separate ways (although some had slightly longer journeys than others due to cows on the line!). It had been a wonderful, memorable trip.
