Isle of Man
14th - 21st August 2021
£450 for single occupancy, discounted to £400 for a shared room. Please note on the booking form the name of the person you want to share with.
The Isle of Man lies in the middle of the Irish Sea between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Based in the cathedral 'city' of Peel, we shall explore the island's fine coast and mountain scenery, using public transport both vintage and modern. There will also be opportunities to visit sites of early Celtic Christianity.
Walks and Excursions
Our walks reflect the diversity of landscape around us, and are available each day with distances varying between 3 and 7 miles, with occasional steep gradients. We shall stroll along coastal footpaths, exploring the island's small towns and unspoilt glens, as well as venturing inland into the hills, for which stout footwear is required. Taking advantage of buses as well as Victorian trams, we shall explore much of the island, including a ride to the summit of Snaefell, at 2036ft the highest point of the island. We shall take time to visit the island's early Celtic keeills (chapels) and stone crosses. Walks are graded Short or Medium, although with some steep sections.
We shall be staying at fine accommodation close to the cathedral in Peel, a bustling port on the west coast. One house available to us is used by the cathedral to accommodate its interns for most of the year; another is the Deanery, just around the corner - where we shall eat and meet together. Well-appointed single, twin and double-bedded rooms are available - some, but not all, with en-suite facilities. Throughout our stay we self-cater as a group, taking it in turns to help prepare and serve meals. On most days we shall bring packed lunches along with us.
There are regular flights to the island from airports throughout the UK and Ireland, and daily sailings from Liverpool and Heysham. Guests should arrive on the island please by 6pm latest on Saturday 14 August, and will be met at the airport or Douglas ferry port. More detailed travel information is available on request.
