What we offer
--- Journeys to off-the-beaten track places, staying at one place and exploring from that central
point. They are usually 7-10 days in length
--- Short Breaks are occasionally offered, lasting 4-6 days
--- Day Walks (no charge)
In addition we occasionally include Pilgrimage-style journeys involving linear travel and staying in at least three places en route.
Our journeys are suitable for singles, couples and people of all ages and we look forward to meeting many new faces as well as welcoming back old friends.
Features common to all our journeys
Walks: Whether your chosen journey has several walks or just a few, the pace is always relaxed, with plenty of time to look at the view and soak up the atmosphere. Alternatives to the walks programme are always available. But we are not a 'walking holiday' organisation per se, for there is far more to what we offer than simply walking.
Spectacular Scenery: Our journeys are set in some of the most remote and beautiful locations in Great Britain and Ireland; history and local culture, together with wonderful scenery, are all part of the experience.
A sense of Community: Most of the holidays are self-catering, which engenders an informal feeling of being at home. Creating a community/family atmosphere are all part of the essential Journeying experience. Journeying together we share laughter and practical tasks which might include packing a minibus, meal preparation and washing up. These are occasions for strengthening community.
Time for Reflection: The days are not crowded with activity; there is thus space and time for reflection, either on your own or with others and time for sharing one another's stories. Each day begins and ends with a time of reflective worship.
Time for Freedom : One of the key features of our holidays is that you can do what is right for you at any particular time; there is no expectation or pressure put on you to join in all that is planned. Such flexibility is important if people are to derive as much as possible by coming on a Journeying holiday.
Spirit of Pilgrimage: Exploring new places, drawing close to God.....there’s a sense of adventure and a spirit of pilgrimage on all our journeys.
Spirit of the Celts: The Celtic Christians were great adventurers who spoke of pilgrimage as ‘wandering for the love of Christ.’ Although our journeys are first and foremost ‘journeys for today,’ many have been inspired by the early Celtic saints who lived on the fringe of Western Europe.
Care and Respect
We try where possible to 'buy local', to use fair trade products and to 'tread lightly in creation' by using public transport whenever appropriate.
For every holiday booked, Journeying will make a donation to the Christian conservation charity Operation Noah.
How Journeying came to be
In 1988 Pilgrim Adventure began to lead small groups of people on pilgrimage to the more remote parts of Britain and Ireland, following in the footsteps of the early Celtic saints. For over twenty years PA continued to take people to places around our islands, but the advent of a new millennium now into its second decade encouraged the PA team to consider a new approach.
So from 2010 onwards, under the name Journeying, we continue to offer a wide range of trips. In a new world with changed priorities for many, encompassing a new pattern of economic and environmental concerns, we felt that it was right to diversify - including a change of name.
But we stay with the spirit of Pilgrim Adventure, its non-profit-making basis, its spiritual ethos and its faith journey. Whilst the new name takes us to new pastures, we don't forget, neither do we leave the fields where we were created; the vision of Pilgrim Adventure will always be with us - small, informal, personal.
The not-so-small-print (i.e. important info)
* We strongly recommend that you take out personal travel insurance for any trip
* Early booking is essential, for we only take small numbers on each journey
* Before you begin your journey we will send you a list of suggested items to bring with
you. We recommend a pair of comfortable walking boots but there'll be no need to carry
more than a day-sac on any of the walks.
* The price of your journey includes all accommodation, meals (except casual refreshments),
entrance fees and transport. Each journey is led by 1-2 volunteer leaders who stay with the
group throughout the journey. Our leaders will be very happy to assist you with your travel
plans to the journey location.
