Day Walks

In the Footsteps of RS Thomas, Aberdaron

Saturday 6th May 2017

Starting Point

St Hywyn's church, Aberdaron, Llyn Peninsula, Wales.

Join us for a day, discovering the quiet backwaters of Aberdaron, the last parish of RS Thomas, set in landscape on the shores of the Irish Sea, that inspired some of his best poetry.

You will visit St Hywyn's church, experience his devotional poetry; explore the hidden valley by river and thicket, leading to Thomas' home; walk along the route of the ancient pilgrims and early Christian saints, marked by sacred well and baptismal bridge; returning by the high road, overlooking the village on the shore.

The walk is graded as easy underfoot, 4 miles long, at a pace that allows time to get a sense of the place and listen to Thomas' poetry in the landscape in which is was conceived. Bring a packed lunch, and footwear suitable for muddy paths. We will end the day at one of the cafes in the village.

Limited to 12 people, please pre-register with the walk leader Susan Fogarty by phone (01758 703039) or email (
